BIBAC Extends its Outreach to Ukraine
More Planned for South America
Riding on the success of its pilot Eastern European event in Belgrade, on Jan 13th, BIBAC took its outreach program to Kyiv, Ukraine. The full day workshop was an enhanced version of the Belgrade Global Dialogue and dealt Transparency, Ethics and Surveillance.
This was a hot topic in Ukraine the event was very well attended (well over 40 people) by senior people representing government, public health, medicine, international trade, agriculture and the private sector.
In addition to Dr. Burleigh Trevor-Deutsch and Dr. Tony Giulivi who presented in Belgrade, BIBAC invited Dr. Neil Cashman, a noted BSE expert from the University of Toronto to speak on the epidemiology of BSE and CJD.
Links to the speaker's Power Point presentations are given below.
As a result of the workshop, BIBAC has been invited to present at the 2nd Ukrainian International Bioethics Conference in September.
The visit also resulted in a cooperation agreement between Dr. Cashman’s lab and that of the National Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev, Department of Virology to train them in aspects of identification and tissue isolation of animals suspected of having Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). It also resulted in linkages between Health Canada and relevant departments in Ukraine.
With the success of these events, organized in cooperation with the Global Development Learning Network of the World Bank and the Pan American Health Organization, more are being planned for South America including Chile and Argentina.
